{Raising Tots} Fall Pretend Play

I am excited to welcome Leslie from Cute and Peculiar as this weeks guest poster for {Raising Tots} Mom to Mom Parenting series. She shares how her and her kids got into the fall spirit. Read on for her fall leaves game.

With fall just around the corner, I was excited to start basic fall activities with my two boys. I went to our local library and found the book Eye Like Nature – Leaves. It is a simple book with pictures of leaves both on a tree and on the ground once fall comes. It was a perfectly simple introduction to the season.

My mother in law is a director of a preschool and when I asked her for any leaf ideas, without hesitation she mentioned this game for toddlers. So this next idea is a tried and true hit tested over the years. It’s a bonus that it is super easy too.

All you need is a few fake fall colored leaves, a basket and a pretend rake (all of which I found at the dollar store). I started off by reading the story to the boys. There is also a little poem/song that goes along with this game.

Start off the game by singing or reading the poem

Red and Orange
Yellow, Brown
Leaves are falling on the ground

Red and Orange

Leaves are falling all around

At this point you toss all the leaves in the air. The boys then raked up all the leaves (although they found it more efficient to pick them up with their hands) and place them back in the basket. Once all the leaves are collected you repeat the game. It didn’t take long for them to fully take over the tossing of the leaves. The boys were in love with this game especially Bear (27m) and he played it for a very long time. In fact we have kept the leaves out in our toy rotation and he loves tossing and collecting them over and over. I am sure this game will be a top request for a while.

This looks like a ton of fun! I might do this outside at grandma’s house on Saturday with my kids! She has a toy rake and trees that drop leaves like crazy in her backyard!
