What do you think of when you think of winter? I think of snow and snowmen. You don’t have to go outside to build snowmen. Once There was a Snowman is such a fun song for toddlers and preschoolers, it is my daughter’s favorite. I thought it would be fun to use our DIY Flannel Board and make some fun felt snowmen to act out the song.
For this activity you’ll need:
- Flannel Board or you can just build your snowman on a table top
- 2 Squares of White Felt (I used sparkly kind)
- 1 square of Black felt
- 1 square of orange felt
How to make the snowmen:
Step. 1 Cut out 3 “snowballs” on each piece of white felt. You can use the bottom of a cup to help trace circles.
Step 2. Then use the black felt to cut out your hat, arms, and scarf.
Step 3. Lastly make a carrot nose from the orange felt
Then we sang the song Once There Was a Snowman which goes like this:
Once there was a snowman, snowman, snowman,
Once there was a snowman,
Tall, tall, tall!
In the sun he melted, melted, melted,
In the sun he melted,
small, small, small!
Use your felt snowman to act out the song. Add snowballs during the “tall, tall, tall” part.
Then remove one snowball at a time during the “small, small, small” part.
She had a blast acting out this song. To extend this activity, let your child build their snowman using different arms shapes, hats, and nose.
This is such a easy and fun winter activity for toddlers and preschoolers. We put our snowmen in a ziplock bag and we get it out often to play with.
