I have been really excited about this project; it has been in the back of my mind for quite some time and I have just been waiting till my daughter was old enough to enjoy it and I think today is the day! I decided to make this easy and cheap DIY large flannel board for my daughter which my mom helped me put together (hi Mom!). This really is a frugal and easy way to make a flannel board. I got the foam board at a craft store for $1.00 and the flannel for $6.99 a yard at Hobby Lobby, using their online 40% off coupon. This project comes out to a total of $4.00, which is just a fraction of the cost for other flannel boards. The possibilities are truly endless for this board and I know that it going to provide countless hours of fun in the years to come! You and your child can make story boards, explore seasons, shapes, and numbers and so much more!
For this activity you need:
- 20 x 30 foam board 3/16 inch thick
- 1 yard 45 inches wide felt- color of your choice, I did baby blue
- Staples and staple gun- 1/4 inch staples
Do not prewash the flannel but iron it flat and then place the outside of the fabric face down on a flat surface
Then lay your foam board on the backside of the flannel, leaving a border of about 3 inches on three sides (we will trim the bottom later)
Staple the long side
Fold the corner into a triangle.
Then bring the edge of the triangle back to the board, staple the corner and do the same to the other end of the board
For the last side, cut the fabric, leaving only 3 inches from the board to fold over, and fold both corners with the triangle fold and then staple
Turn it over; make sure the flannel is flat and there are no wrinkles and then stand it up on its vertical edge and pull it tight. Lay the board back down carefully and finish stapling.
You can then secure it more by stapling more as needed. Just to be on the safe side, double check that you have no loose staples that could fall out during play.
There you have it!
Make sure to check back in the week for a fun pumpkin felt board activity! Here is a sneak peek!

So cute! I made a very similar flannel board and we have been having lots of fun playing with it. I’m excited to see your pumpkin flannel board story.
